BIO
RIO has made a significant mark on the international music scene as a gifted ukulele player. He’s clinched first place at prestigious events like the historic Dukes Ukulele Contest and the International Ukulele Contest in Hawaii, along with winning Amateur Night at the legendary Apollo Theater in New York City.
From a young age, RIO has been a trailblazer, earning the grand prize at the Diners Club Social Jazz Session in Tokyo at just 13. A bilingual artist, he has become a familiar face at TEDx events, including TEDxTokyo 2014, where his engaging performances and insights have captivated audiences.
Currently an endorsed artist for Kamaka Ukulele, RIO has participated in the NAMM Show and released several albums in Hawaii. His compilation album *Island Style Ukulele Vol. 2* and the *Kamaka Ukulele 100th Anniversary* album, *Kamaka Ukulele Presents Keep Strumming!*, both won the prestigious Na Hoku Hanohano Award—Hawaii’s equivalent of the Grammy. Additionally, his album *I~around~* from Japan received a nomination for International Album of the Year.
In 2020 and 2021, RIO showcased his talent alongside renowned jazz pianist Makoto Ozone at the reopened Blue Note Tokyo, where he was introduced as a “Rising Star” during the challenging COVID-19 period. He has also released his highly anticipated first solo album, which marks a significant chapter in his artistic journey.
Recognized for his innovative approach to music, RIO was named one of Forbes Japan’s 30 Under 30 in 2023 and has since been selected for the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia 2024 in the Arts category.
With his unparalleled expressive power and ability to transcend genres and borders, RIO is not just a ukulele player; he is a musical force redefining the possibilities of the instrument.
